Engineering Team Health & Burnout Risk Calculator

Meetings, interrupts, on-call, a sprint that slips, and a recent voluntary exit all take points off a team score. This page shows the score, the band, and the three cuts that would give points back. It is a signal for the team you describe. It is not a diagnosis of a person.

Enter meeting hours, unplanned work, on-call shifts, sprint predictability, and the last voluntary exit. An in-browser AI agent shows a 0–100 health score, a Green to Critical band, and the three cuts that return the most points. No API key. Not a diagnosis.

Five signals, said in plain words

  1. Meeting hours. Hours the team spends in meetings in a normal week. The first 8 hours are free. Each hour after that costs 2 points.
  2. Unplanned work. Incidents and interrupts that were not on the sprint board. Each percent costs 0.4 points.
  3. On-call. Primary shifts in a month. Each shift costs 4 points.
  4. Sprint predictability. Share of the sprint that actually lands. 80% or better adds no penalty. Each point below that costs 0.5 points.
  5. Last voluntary exit. Under 3 months costs 20. Between 3 and 12 months costs 10. Longer than that, or none you know of, costs 0. One exit is a signal, not a verdict on a person.

A worked example, before you touch a slider

14 meeting hours. 25% unplanned. 2 on-call shifts. 65% of the sprint lands. Last voluntary exit: 3 to 12 months.

  1. Meetings: (14 − 8) × 2 = 12 points.
  2. Unplanned work: 25 × 0.4 = 10. On-call: 2 × 4 = 8.
  3. Predictability: (80 − 65) × 0.5 = 7.5. Attrition: 10.
  4. Score = 100 − 47.5 = 52.5, shown as 53. Band Amber. 17 points short of Green (70).
  5. Largest cuts in this example are meetings, then unplanned work, then the recent exit. Move a slider and the AI agent rewrites the three actions.

How the model works

  1. Meetings = hours above 8 × 2.
  2. Unplanned = percent × 0.4.
  3. On-call = shifts × 4.
  4. Predictability = points below 80 × 0.5. At or above 80%, this line is zero.
  5. Attrition = 20, 10, or 0 from the window you pick.
  6. Score = 100 − those five lines, held between 0 and 100, then rounded. Green starts at 70. Amber starts at 50. Red starts at 30. Under 30 is Critical.

The AI agent fills this line after it runs.

FAQ

Does this diagnose burnout?

No. The score is a team signal from five numbers you type: meeting hours, unplanned work, on-call shifts, sprint predictability, and how recent the last voluntary exit was. It is not a clinical assessment, not an HR finding, and not a rating of a person.

How does the math work?

Start at 100. Meetings cost 2 points for each hour past 8. Unplanned work costs 0.4 points per percent. Each on-call shift costs 4. Each predictability point below 80 costs 0.5. A voluntary exit under 3 months costs 20, one between 3 and 12 months costs 10, and an older exit or none costs 0. The score is 100 minus that sum, held between 0 and 100, then rounded.

What do the bands mean?

Green is 70 to 100. Amber is 50 to 69. Red is 30 to 49. Critical is under 30. The page also says how many points are still short of Green, and ranks the three largest penalties so the first action is the one that returns the most points.

Do I need an API key?

No API key is required. No OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google key. Results are directional heuristics with an AI agent experience: a badge, a short thinking step, and a stamp. The formulas run in your browser. Numbers stay on screen before any email ask. Email is only for the printable summary.

Is the AI agent calling a cloud model?

No. The AI agent on this page is the in-browser analysis experience. It uses rule-based heuristics. No name, calendar, or HR record is sent to a third-party model.

What should we do in the first 90 days?

The results panel writes a three-step sequence from your numbers. Days 1–30 record the five inputs you can defend. Days 31–60 act on the largest penalty. Days 61–90 re-score, and if the band is still short of Green, tell the skip-level the score and the point gap. The sequence is a planning aid, not a medical plan.
